Because I have had to simplify our literature selections (as in we are only doing Chronicles of Narnia and G.A. Henty books this year along with Bauer’s Story of the World), I have not invested the time into finding free e-books that tie in to Cycle 1. But for those needing or wanting the freebies, here’s how to find some great literature selections and history readings for you and your family. All you need is a way to read e-books and/or a way to play mp3s…
How to find free literature for Cycle 1
- First, check out book recommendations, descriptions, and appropriate age levels at Yesterday’s Classics.
- Once you have found some books of interest (from reading the Yesterday’s Classics descriptions), search for that literature on Archive.org. Free e-books can also be found in both e-pub/pdf and/or mp3 format at Project Gutenberg, Google e-books (search and then select “free” from the drop-down menu), Librivox, BooksShouldBeFree, or MainLesson (also known as The Baldwin Project) . For even more children’s literature, visit Children’s Books On-Line. JustFreeBooks searches most of these websites but is not always easy sorting through all the search results…
- Download and read it!
These sites usually link to each other, so if you search for something on Archive, it will usually pull up google e-books and Librivox mp3s.
|Browse through Yesterday’s Classics Site. Decide to search for On the Shores of the Great Sea by M.B. Synge.|
On the Shores of the Great Sea on Archive.org.

|On the Shores of the Great Sea AudioBook on Archive.org linked to Librivox recordings.|
Eureka! Because I’ve already found it, I won’t continue looking through the other sites. (Therefore, my recommendation is always to search archive.org first, which links to just about everything else – including Google e-books/Kindle downloads.)
There are also several nature study books listed on Yesterday’s Classics that would be great for the fall semester!
