Review & Giveaway: Earth Science - Creation Science for Kids

Mid-schoolyear is always a time for reflection for me.  I seem to re-evaluate and question everything I'm doing in January.  Maybe it's because it's a new year, or maybe it's because I have a Type A Personality and feel as if I've failed on so many levels. This year has been a rough one for us academically.  (AAACCKK!  I'm an overplanner and didn't get everything on my checklist checked off!)

But, really, what is most important to me as a parent?  For my children to know and love God and to be capable of making Him known to the world around us.  But... how are we seeking to know God or make Him known through our studies?  When left to myself, I do not do this as fabulously as I would like. I'm pressed for time (aren't we all?), and it's just not always easy to find textbooks and resources that align what we are memorizing to the Bible in a way that edifies our faith.  Here, I say once again:
And for those of us who are currently restoring two generations of education, it takes a good deal of forethought and prayer to recognize and point out how He is revealed through all subjects.  So, how can I piece together all this diversity into a unified message about God?
At the end of the day, oftentimes I reflect upon what we've done and wish that I had done a better job of showing my children how God is revealed through every subject we've studied.  (Really, I have so much room for improvement in this area!) So... when I come across something that helps me make sense of these topics (much like the Apologia Science series) AND is aligned with our memory work, I consider it a blessing!
Creation Science for Kids: Earth Science is a science curriculum (written by an insightful CC homeschooling Mom) containing a Biblical approach to studying each piece of science memory work for second semester of Cycle 1.  This 52-page book contains additional information for each science fact (some great related history, too!), along with scripture references and Bible study questions that correlate with each topic.  These books even provide the original language (Hebrew/Greek) of the Bible to give a deeper meaning of the related scriptures.  If you're not sure how to approach the study of Earth Science from a Biblical worldview, you can take a look at a portion of the Seven Summits lesson here to see if it's something your family could use this semester.  You can also sign up to receive the free Classifications of Living Things chapter here and/or the free Bible Lessons for Kids:  Genesis 1 Creation study here by entering your email address.  You can also visit the free resources page to download other freebies.

Last semester, our family greatly benefited from the use of the Creation Science for Kids Biology Study Unit. We simply used it as our devotion one morning per week instead of our normal Bible studies.  And, honestly, the Creation Science for Kids series has promoted and encouraged so much wonderful discussion at our breakfast table!  It is a wonderful way to expound upon our science memory work AND connect that memory work to Biblical truths.  And because we have been so limited in what we can do this year, it has been a true blessing!

Mia from The Homeschool Curriculum Company is giving away two free copies of the e-book Creation Science for Kids: Earth Science Study Unit.  Thanks, Mia!

  1. Earth science points straight to God's amazing creation (knowing God) and we look forward to sharing our discoveries with others (make Him known).

  4. God is definitely redeeming 2 generations here in our family! I am amazed after all of my schooling in a private CHRISTIAN school how I am learning so differently now with the classical model. This science curriculum could be a huge answer to prayer.

  5. This year we are seeking to restore two generations more than ever before. We visited the Creation Museum in October and have been so much more aware of how pervasive the evolution theory is. I'm excited to find this curriculum. Earlier this week, I was researching and trying to find an earth science curriculum for my girls.

  6. The thought of my children and others being "unleashed" on the world at the end of our homeschool journey is what keeps me in the trenches. I am thrilled that my children are leaning how to recognize absolute Truth and Beauty in their early years. Soon we will delve into compelling and competent ways of defending that Truth and Beauty. And I get to learn right along with them. Logic and apologetics has always intimidated me...I'm blessed to have a second chance.

  7. As someone who was publicly schooled, and didn't become a believer until my mid-twenties, it helps me to have a curriculum that opens up discussions of how God is intertwined through all of my children's learning

  8. I love that CC keeps God centered in all of the studies, but the timeline has taught me proper placement of everything. I love that!

Last September, there was a document on CC Connected that tried to tie some truths from God's word into our Science projects for that week. I had never considered trying to do that. That document encouraged me to think "outside the box" and look for all the different ways that we can learn about and bring Glory to God. I am not very good at it (yet), but hope to look at our school work in a different way. In a way that brings glory to Him.

I have also been thinking about "why" I homeschool. This has given me a greater drive to teach my children how to hide God's word in their hearts. The more of His word we know, the more we can meditate on it, and the more we can see him working in our lives and in our world.

  10. I want to know God and really get my children and grandchildren to know Him, I suppose in this way we are educating two generations of our family about God and his ways. In so many ways I feel that we ourselves are being taught what is right and seeing new things where we were not taught right as children. I would so love to win a copy of this book to teach my children from.
    Thank you

  11. The 'restoring two generations' privilege of this curriculum really grabbed my interest. I hated history and now, I not only see it's significance, but also enjoy it so much. As my child is learning about Ceaser Augustus, I'm referencing in Scripture where he is mentioned. I understand Scripture so much more now and have gained an interest in learning much more. I'm so excited that my kids are getting this training from the get go. Wow, how much more would I understand God's Word if I had all this information stored in my brain! And, how much easier/comfortable would I be in sharing God's love through His Word.

  12. We are seeking to "know God and make Him known" by teaching our kids (4,8,10) how to be a peacemaker with every conflict in our home, especially amongst their siblings. This often comes out in the form of asking them pointed questions at the moment the conflict occurs like, "What was going on in your heart when you boasted you are the better in math than your sibling?" or "How can you replace that mean comment with a kind one, knowing Jesus is always kind to you?" etc. It can be wearisome at times but knowing Christ never gives up on us keeps us pointing each other to Him!

  13. I was just looking at that blog yesterday morning, and I was amazed at how close I thought that would line up with CC. Funny she's a CC mom. I'd love to add that to our week of study. I especially like how you suggested doing that science study as part of you morning devotion with your family. My intent is to overlap all the studies with Gods word, but that doesn't always happen.. I think the easiest name of God for my kids to grasp is Creator God... so I think this spring we will focus on that a lot as we learn earth science.

  14. We, as a family, are seeking God daily and learning how to "Make Him Famous!" We are part of a small, organic family of believers. We meet at a thrift shop and welcome any who want to come to hear God's word and work in the trenches alongside our families. We reach out to homeless, drug-users, felons and more in an effort to share the notion with each one that "God loves YOU best." :) It has been so good for our kids to be in a messy church environment and to learn to share their lives with "the least of these." Church was always so sterile and boring when I was a kid. I want them to know just how dynamic God really is. Pray for our outreach and for our parent ministry, House of Hope Ministries.

  15. This is my first year participating in CC, and it has shaped me and my view of God and history! I love that my first year happens to be the study of the Ancient World. Many times this year, my personal daily Bible reading has matched up with what we've been studying in CC. It has made God "real" to me in a brand new way, realizing that the story of the world is truly His Story. Reading about how the civilizations of old played out, both in the Bible and history books truly makes me wonder how people can possible deny God. It makes me more excited to share what the Lord has done in my life, makes me even more in awe of our amazing God, makes me thirsty to know more, and long to fill in the gaps of my own education. I love it, and only pray that my enthusiasm bubbles over and spills into my kids' lives a bit.

  16. This is our first year with CC and we are loving every minute. CC has helped us realize I truly can incorporate God and our faith in all subjects. I am getting so much out of the Ancient History, Timeline, and Geography. I love when doing my daily Bible reading and some reference pops up which I now know more about through CC. I am loving learning all over again, maybe more this time that it's tied to my faith. And I feel humbled and blessed to start my children on this path as well.

  17. This is my first year doing cc with my 4 year old and I am amazed every week how much i learn about history and how it all ties together. Our home is a good example of two generations being restored!

  18. Through CC I have been able to see how all things (ie, history, science, math, etc) are all related through the beauty of God's own creation and design

  19. As I'm somewhat new to classical schooling, the thought of putting God first in learning is now so obvious but wasn't growing up in public schooling. Thank you for all the work that you do for "us" out here. :-)

  20. This is our 2nd year in CC, and although I achieved a high level of education, I feel like my education is being redeemed. I have been in tears with joy that my children are getting to learn in this beautiful way. They will have the structure to hang the rest of their educations on as they move up in their learning. This year I am working to really keep in centered on God rather than trying to duplicate a typical school model at home. This curriculum looks like a helpful tool for keeping the conversation centered on God.

  21. loving this article... I also have many plans but like all things I fail in my own skin... Only He who gives Power can have Power through me to show off His great Power of wondrous Creator... I pray and hold on to The Promise that He will complete the work in me that which He began... to God be the Glory-but ultimately all things point back to the Cross--even my failures! Praying for all of us as we walk this journey!

  22. This is a great article. We are so thankful for all you share with us. We bought this curriculum for the first 12 weeks and really enjoyed using it. We honor God each day by learning about His world and His Word. We seek to make Him known by putting others first, which has been a big challenge and an onward journey. : ) I homeschool my nine-year old daughter and this is our fourth year in CC. : )

  23. Funny how this became so clear when I started to homeschool: Seeking to know God and make Him known are one in the same when you are completely transparent to your children. They see me search for the answers from God through prayer and He is made known to them as we marvel in what he provides us, whether as the answer to my prayer or just His creation all around us.

  24. Thanks for providing us ways to flesh out the curriculum that CC provides. It is a struggle everyday and I always feel very inadequate.

  25. We try to show our kids on everything in creation points to God, but it can be changing with so many badly written books on these subjects. This curriculum would be a big help with this.

  26. "knowing God and making Him known" is a bigger challenge than I ever imagined now that I have a child with autism. God is invisible, non-concrete to a child who needs visual and concrete to understand and learn. I continue to look for ways to make Him tangible, concrete, visible, real for my child.

  27. CC is giving me the opportunity to learn things over again with fresh eyes towards God's hand in everything. I love that I'm doing this with my children and watching them grow in their knowledge of God. My prayer is that as they grow, this will be so ingrained in them, that they will naturally be able to share with others the Gospel.

  28. Just started God's Design for Heaven and Earth by Answers in Genesis to go along with what we are learning this semester in CC. I'm looking forward to the biblical perspective this crew is so gifted in bringing to light as we study God's creation. The Psalms are also a wonderful way to incorporate God's Word as declaring the wonderful works of God in all of His creation.

  29. I love the fact that myself and my children can be excited about learning together. I love every time that light bulb goes off when a topic we've memorized comes up in our daily lives, whether a newscast, a museum exhibit, or a reference in a book we're reading. We are all being classically educated and becoming better witnesses for Christ! It's a win, win, win, win!

  30. The integration of all subjects and how they all are all interrelated and point to God drew me to the classical method and then CC. I am so thankful God showed me CC, and that my children and I together get to learn about Him and the world He created. I want our family to "know God and make Him known." Is anything more important???
