For each cycle, Classical Conversations offers suggested passages of scripture for Bible memorization. The Bible Memory Work for Classical Conversations is located in the Appendix of the Foundations Guide and correlates in some way to each cycle's memory work. For Cycle 1, it's Exodus 20:1-17. For Cycle 2, it's Ephesians 6, and for Cycle 3 (which is the only cycle in which it is required memory work because we memorize the Latin translation), it's John 1:1-7.
Many CC communities review the Bible memory work during the opening assembly, but the tutor does not review this in the classroom because it is not part of the core work for CC. It is a suggested passage for memorization for families who do not have another program in which they are already memorizing scripture. It is not memorized as part of the memory master proofing process in the spring.
As a family, we plan to always have CC's suggested Bible memory work on our tri-fold board to at least review and talk about it. We will also attempt to memorize Exodus 20:1-17 this year. But, to be honest, that long passage was looking a bit overwhelming to me... until...
More than any other method, our family uses songs for memory work and scripture memorization. In the past, we've enjoyed memorizing scripture through Seeds Family Worship, The Blazing Center, and Steve Green's Hide'em in your Heart. And now we have the great privilege of reviewing MegaVerses Volume 3: All Scripture by Mega Verse Ministries!
Fellow CC Parents Tommy & Jo Hendricks use their family's musical gifts to assist other families with memorizing large passages of scripture through their ministry Mega Verse Ministries. They also provide downloadable lyric videos that can be used for worship at churches and in your own home. The songs included on the Megaverses Volume 3: All Scripture album are:
- Fruit of the Spirit - Galatians 5:22-26
- Follow Me - Luke 9:23-24
- Rejoice - Matthew 5:3-12
- Be With You - Philippians 4:4-9
- All Scripture - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
- Unless the Lord - Psalm 127
- Eternal Life - John 3:16-18
- Living Sacrifice - Romans 12:1-2
- Saved - Romans 10:9-13
- Iniquity of Us All - Isaiah 53:4-6
- How Beautiful - Romans 10:14-15
- Treasures - Matthew 6:19-21
- Exodus 20:1-17 (King James Version)
After listening to this album, I can wholeheartedly recommend MegaVerses for any and all parents and communities who need a resource to assist with the memorization of the Exodus 20:1-17 passage. Beyond that, though, I recommend downloading the entire album, which includes 12 other songs to practice and memorize together as a family! For a look into the importance of hiding God's Word in your heart, visit this blog post from my very own heart. The truth is, I am weak, but He is strong. And His Word that is hidden in this feeble heart strengthens me. I draw upon it in those long days when struggles loom ahead. In times like this (when our water-well pressure tank springs a leak and we're not sure if we'll have enough water to sustain us until it can be fixed, when our van is wrecked by a drunk driver while on a trip to visit family in Oklahoma, when my middle son struggles with a serious bout of pneumonia, ...), these songs of scripture are what come to my mind and get me through the next few moments. And I am so thankful for families like the Hendricks who offer their talents to help hide God's Word in my heart.
