With all the distractions that fall upon us in the coming weeks, it’s easy to miss out on the most important part of this season – that the Word became flesh. The Son of God left His glory on high to live in this broken world all because of love. How can I so easily forget to stop and contemplate something so wonderfully profound?
As I’ve considered ways to flood our home with the true focus of our celebration of the upcoming season, I keep returning to this one thought: the glory of prophecies fulfilled. If, as a family, we take some of those prophecies we’ve studied during our Jesse Tree devotions – and we not only read them and reflect upon them, but we actually memorize them, we will have those words hidden in our hearts to call upon for the rest of our lives.
Over the past five years, our family has memorized more scripture from Seeds Family Worship than through any other means. Last March we experienced the incredible blessing of recording a song with them in the studio as supporters of their Lullaby album. {You can download the song we recorded for free here.} And now… they’ve pulled together one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard. Honestly, this is my favorite Seeds album yet. It is simply beautiful – not just for this time of year, but for all time. Here’s a glimpse of what’s in store….
My heart longs for the beauty, peace, and joy we find in truly celebrating the birth of our Savior. I yearn for that resounding echo of exuberance to fill our homes and hearts to the point that it spills over into joyful service to others. As we sing Christmas music with lyrics straight from the Bible, we worship God with His own words. Our family is connecting the Old Testament prophecies to the Good News fulfilled within the New Testament.
Our family listens to hymns and scripture songs as we’re cranking up in the mornings or when we’re doing chores. Because the goal of Seeds Family Worship is to see moms and dads “equipped to lead their families in Bible study, Bible memorization, and family worship,” they also provide free Seeds Family Bible Club devotions and activities, or you can use the simple guidelines below (taken from the Seeds Family Worship blog).
Simple Family Worship & Devotions
- Open With Prayer
- Play (and sing) a Seeds song or watch a Seeds video.
- Open the Bible and read the scripture in context and talk about what it means. Start a discussion by asking questions about the scripture. This is a great time for Mom or Dad to tell a story and talk about how this scripture has impacted them or how God has used in their life.
- Play (and sing) a Seeds song or watch a Seeds video again. After the song, we go around one by one and each person says the scripture we just learned. Usually they have it memorized, (even if they have to sing it with me). Lots of encouragement happens here after each person says the scripture.
- Close in Prayer! Ask your kids how you can pray for them and share how they can pray for you. Ultimately in life you kids will learn how to pray by watching you.
Note: Half of the videos also have hand motions to assist with memorization, and these can also be used for kids worship for a children’s program at church.
