Item details

This 11-page PDF document includes reading correlations for all three cycles of the Classical Conversations Foundations Program for both Foundations Guide 4th Edition and Foundations Guide 5th Edition. Chapter or lesson and/or page numbers from the following books are correlated to the weekly history memory work…

  • Scholastic’s Everything You Need to Know about World History Homework (2005 edition). This is a desk reference that has short explanations and illustrations that correlate with the history memory work for Cycles 1 and 2. (CC used the Scholastic books to develop the history and science content in the Foundations Guide)
  • Scholastic’s Everything You Need to Know about American History Homework (2005 edition). This is a desk reference that has short explanations and illustrations that correlate with the history memory work for Cycle 2 Weeks 13-23 and Cycle 3.
  • The Story of the World Volume 1 by Susan Wise Bauer
  • The Story of the World Volume 2 by Susan Wise Bauer
  • The Story of the World Volume 3 by Susan Wise Bauer (Page numbers are included for both original 2004 Edition and the revised edition released in February 2020. Revised edition page numbers are indicated by the abbreviation REV.)
  • The Story of the World Volume 4 by Susan Wise Bauer (Page numbers are included for both original 2005 Edition and the revised edition released in March 2021. Revised edition page numbers are indicated by the abbreviation REV.)
    • Purchase all four volumes of The Story of the World at a discount in our shop here!
  • The Mystery of History Volume 1 by Linda Lacour Hobar
  • The Mystery of History Volume 2 by Linda Lacour Hobar
  • The Mystery of History Volume 3 by Linda Lacour Hobar
  • The Mystery of History Volume 4 by Linda Lacour Hobar

Note if using The Mystery of History: The CC reading correlations reference lesson numbers for The Mystery of History. Because the lesson numbers/topics have stayed the same throughout all editions of The Mystery of History, these correlations will correspond to any edition of The Mystery of History.

Science memory work correlations for all three cycles are also provided using:

  • Scholastic’s Everything You Need To Know About Science Homework (2005 Edition). This is a desk reference that has short explanations and illustrations that correlate with the science memory work for Cycles 1 and 2. Note that it references evolution/old earth/millions of years.
  • Lyrical Life Science Volume 3 Book. For Cycle 3 Weeks 1-12, this book also has a corresponding audio CD of songs that provide more detail regarding the different body systems.

Whether you enjoy the short, illustrated descriptions in the Scholastic Everything You Need to Know… series, the engaging storytelling format of The Story of the World or the Christ-centered focus of The Mystery of History, these correlations provide a handy reference for finding out more about the facts you’re memorizing.

The Cycle 1, Cycle 2, and Cycle 3 Reading Correlations are also available in our newly updated Cycle-Specific Planners with Planning Resource Packets (also listed below).

It’s not necessary to correlate readings for each week in Classical Conversations. In the past, our family selected one series or book and read from the beginning to the end (primarily with audios) without correlating it the readings to memory work. (For example, we listened to Story of the World (SOTW) Volume 1 in the car the summer before Cycle 1; we read through Mystery of History Volume 1 the last time we were in Cycle 1, we listened to SOTW Volume 2 & 3 when we were in Cycle 2…. and so on.) We have used these reading correlations as reference sheets when we’ve had questions or interest in a particular person/event or if we wanted to take a deeper look into the history or timeline memory work. Another way to read through Story of the World is to read Volumes 1 and 2 during Cycle 1 and read Volumes 3 and 4 during Cycle 2. This leaves Cycle 3 open to use American history programs like America’s Story (our preferred U.S. history curriculum used in Mission: Lasting Liberty) or America the Beautiful by the Notgrass Company.

Our family does not use all of these resources at the same time. From these books (over a six year period), we read Story of the World Volumes 1 through 4, Mystery of History Volume 1 & 2, Lyrical Life Science (Cycle 3), and the Scholastic Everything You Need to Know About… books. (You can check out our review of Mystery of History Volume 4 here.) We also used these resources for history and science research for the Essentials and Challenge programs.

Cycle 1 with the Great Commission in Mind

An integrated reading plan that is not correlated week by week to the memory work but overlaps Cycle 1 history and science topics.  For an open-and-go reading/curriculum plan that overlaps much of the memory work studied during Cycle 1 – with an integrated study of world missions, world empires & geography, fine arts, and science, check out our Mission: World Wonders Curriculum Plan. This Christian Classical Curriculum integrates the study of the world and the ongoing fulfillment of the Great Commission, with a focus on loving God, His Word, and fellow mankind.

Note: Although Mission: World Wonders is not directly correlated to the memory work, it includes a more complete study of biology, earth science, and world history from ancient times through the Middle Ages. The books selected for this reading plan were chosen as long-term resources for students to use when they embark on research and world geography memorization in grades 7+. This study has been designed to be used independently of Classical Conversations®. For families who use Classical Conversations®, the readings assigned in the Mission: World Wonders study overlap much of the memory work studied during Cycle 1 but are not correlated week by week. This provides an opportunity for ongoing review and integration of the memory work throughout the year.

Cycle 2 with Church History and Missions Focus

After designing curriculum plans for nearly a decade, we developed a Christian Classical Curriculum that integrates the study of the world and the ongoing fulfillment of the Great Commission, with a focus on loving God, His Word, and fellow mankind. For a reading/curriculum plan that overlaps much of the memory work studied during Cycle 2 – with an integrated study of church history, world history/geography, science, and fine arts, check out our Mission: Faith Forgers Curriculum Plan.

Note: Although Mission: Faith Forgers is not directly correlated to the memory work, it includes a more complete study of astronomy, physical science, and history. The books selected for this reading plan were chosen as long-term resources for students to use when they embark on research and world geography memorization in grades 7+. This study has been designed to be used independently of Classical Conversations®. For families who use Classical Conversations®, the readings assigned in the Mission: Faith Forgers study overlaps much of the memory work studied during Cycle 2 but is not correlated week by week. This provides an opportunity for ongoing review and integration of the memory work throughout the year.

Cycle 3 with Faith Focus

For a reading/curriculum plan that overlaps much of the memory work studied during Cycle 3 with an emphasis on America’s foundations of faith along with an integrated study of U.S. history, geography, and fine arts (along with science studies from a Christian worldview), check out our Mission: Lasting Liberty Curriculum Plan.

The Mission Lasting Liberty Lesson Plans use some of the best resources that we recommend and use in our homeschool for geography, history, fine arts, and science. It’s the most robust and integrated one-year study of American history and geography that we offer.

Note: Although Mission: Lasting Liberty is not directly correlated to the memory work, it includes a more complete study of anatomy, chemistry, and U.S. History. The books selected for this reading plan were chosen as long-term resources for students to use when they embark on research and world geography memorization in grades 7+. This study has been designed to be used independently of Classical Conversations®. For families who use Classical Conversations®, the readings assigned in the Mission: Lasting Liberty study overlap much of the memory work studied during Cycle 3 but are not correlated week by week. This provides an opportunity for ongoing review and integration of the memory work throughout the year.
