Celebrating Easter in One-and-a-Half Weeks

I receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Please see our full disclosure policy for more details. Thank you for supporting Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood through your purchases.

My husband works a rotational assignment as a supervisor on a drillship in another country.

A drawback:  He misses holidays, birthdays, and lots-of-other-days (including Easter).

A benefit:  We celebrate each holiday that he misses either multiple times or across many days…

And so, our Easter celebration started on Palm Sunday when we colored Easter eggs with some very good friends of ours who sort-of adopted our family after we moved to Middle Tennessee.

When I was a kid, we thought we were very creative if we dunked half of the egg in one color of dye and then flipped it over to dunk the other half in another color of dye.  Boy, was I mistaken! This year we learned how to:

  • write words on our eggs by using white crayon before dying them
  • create polka dots, stripes, funny faces, and really cool designs
  • and tie-dye our eggs!

We even had little kits to make our eggs into dinosaurs!  I designated one dozen to be kept back in the fridge for us to hide from daddy when he gets home (this week! HOORAY!!).  The rest have been hidden at least a dozen times already.

Some we found a couple of days after hiding them.  (EEWWW!!)  Most of the eggs we’ve used this past week are tattered and worn to the point of exhaustion.  (Sort of like me right now? Heh!)

The boys woke up to Easter baskets at the foot of their beds.  Now, the Easter bunny seems to pride herself on finding practical “baskets” for our family.

Levi’s Easter Basket

Stephen’s Easter Basket

David’s Easter Basket
BUT… it was when we were at church that I then realized that David’s Easter “basket” was designed to hold something much larger than pieces of candy (like bottles of Windex).  Thus, a desperate search ensued for something with which to partially cover the gaps in his basket.  I  was able to get the bottom set of holes taped over just before the hunt started, so all was well (except candy still fell out of it).

After three failed attempts at taking a pleasant family photo, we finally got this one:
My hair and my face have seen better days, but that’s another story.  Besides, it’s at this point in Gary’s hitch that I am usually fine with people seeing me any which way.  Of course, I try to look nice for him the day he gets home.  🙂
Later today, Stephen and Levi each completed a mini-book called the Story of Easter (available for free at Bible Story Printables).  David was apparently on strike at the time.  I think he said something like, “I’m not going to color anything!”  And I said something like, “Okay.”
After our fine Easter meal of… spaghetti… we settled down to read two new books – The Parable of the Lily by Liz Curtis Higgs, and The Legend of the Easter Egg by Lori Walburg.  I loved adding these books to our collection!  They provide a great way to use these two Easter traditions – lilies and Easter eggs –to explain the real reason for celebrating Easter:  We have new life in Christ, for He is risen!  (I highly recommend The Parable of the Lily.  It is fantastic!)
Both of these books have free lapbook templates available at homeschoolshare.  But I think we’ll tackle those next year.  Maybe David will even be off strike by then!
This one’s for you Gary!  We love and miss you!
