Classic Elementary Physical Science Curriculum Review

I receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Please see our full disclosure policy for more details. Thank you for supporting Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood through your purchases.

Sometimes I try something different, only to find that my children prefer a tried-and-true method of the past.

So has been the case with science this year.

When I pulled out the books that I had purchased for our study of physical science this spring, my children instead opted for something we used three years ago…

In fact, when I asked them about whether or not they wanted to use Mr. Q’s Elementary Physical Science, eyes widened, mouths grinned, and a loud “Yes!!!” echoed throughout our home.

Our boys have loved reading Mr. Q’s Classic Science series.  The experiments are simple and fun, and the textbook contains enough corny jokes and comics that they cannot wait to read it every week!

I like it because it teaches them real science at their level. It contains detailed information about the scientific method. It provides experiments, worksheets, and unit tests. But most of all, our family has enjoyed the memories we’ve made from using this program together.

To download a sample, click here.  [Be sure to download both the student sample and the parent sample]  You can also download a whole bunch of experiments at the Labnotes Archive.

This program is designed to be completed across a 36-week period.  However, our family completes about one unit per week on our science day, which is Friday. We don’t attempt to correlate the experiments with memory work. We just work straight through the units and allow review opportunities to pop up along the way. My children seriously love this program.  Many of the activities listed on our Ecology, Astronomy, and Physical Science Resource page come from Mr. Q’s Labnotes Archive. Not only that, but you can download the entire Elementary Life Science Curriculum for free on his website to see if this style of learning fits your family!

This program is only available as a digital download. Before we had an eReader, we printed out each unit into separate booklets (using the booklet option under Adobe Acrobat Reader’s print options).

Mr. Q’s Annual Holiday Sale takes place in January, when you can get 50% off all orders! (This is how we’ve purchased copies of the entire elementary series over the past few years!)
