Creeks, forts, stones and bones

I receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Please see our full disclosure policy for more details. Thank you for supporting Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood through your purchases.

It was a lovely day to take a hike through the woods and up the ridge (ahem…only part of the way, though, since Levi was on my hip).  On the way up, we added a few animal bones to our bone collection at Fort Bones.

No animals were harmed in the making of this blog post.

Then the boys showed me a new stone fort at a place we named “Pride Rock” in honor of Lion King.  The picture of our new stone fort did not come out clearly, but here’s a photo of a small portion of Pride Rock:
After hiking back down the ridge, we decided to stop off at Flat Rock Creek…

…and eventually made our way down to Flat Rock.  The tremendous amount of rain over the past week had actually carried our soccer balls all the way down here!

After lunch (and a change of clothes), we went back to the creek to look for “chalkboard rocks” (slate).  As we kept our eyes open for fossils, arrowheads, and other great discoveries, we also searched for state- and letter-shaped rocks for an ongoing project we’ve been working on as part of our rock collection.

After coming back in for the evening, we wrote on our new chalkboards.

And we tried to figure out which rocks in our collection looked like states.  We’ve been collecting these for some time now.  This is the first time we’ve sorted through and labeled them.

Then we all worked together to spell out the boys’ names using our rocks.

A fun day of discovery for all of us.  And my special discovery?  The buttercups are coming up!  Spring is on its way, hooray!

Nature Connections is a collaborative link collection posted at the end of each month on Living and Learning.  Its purpose is to showcase photos of children enjoying nature to inspire all of us to get outdoors more.
