High School Chemistry Simplified

I receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Please see our full disclosure policy for more details. Thank you for supporting Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood through your purchases.

For years, our family has used Jay Wile’s Discovering Design with Chemistry, which has prepared our sons well for college-level science. However, we’ve been searching for another option to help families in tackling this often challenging subject with confidence. We’re excited to share that we’ve finally found a high school chemistry course that not only provides quality, self-paced, video-based instruction (with labs!), but also includes automatic grading of quizzes and exams — and is taught from a Christian worldview. That course? Experience Chemistry.

NOTE: Lesson plans for this course are provided in our High School Lessons: Truth Trek Two program, which provides plans for a full year of study in chemistry, world history, world literature/composition, foreign language, math, and electives (Bible, finance, and economics).

If you find yourself lacking adequate time to provide one-on-one instruction in chemistry or if you just don’t feel comfortable with teaching high school level lab sciences, Experience Chemistry from Journey Homeschool Academy provides an entire year of video instruction (with labs) covering the following chemistry concepts (along with historical and biblical connections as appropriate):

  • The scientific method
  • Matter, measurement, and unit conversions
  • Precision and accuracy in science (significant digits)
  • Atoms and elements and electrons
  • The Periodic Table
  • Chemical bonds and chemical formulas
  • Balancing chemical equations
  • Types of chemical reactions and how these reactions occur
  • Kinetic Molecular Theory
  • Gas laws
  • Solubility
  • Acids & bases
  • Thermochemistry
  • Equilibrium
  • Redox reactions
  • Electrochemistry
  • Nuclear stability
  • Radioactive decay

Each lesson includes…

  • two to three instructional videos introducing chemistry concepts and/or mathematical calculations, along with a corresponding reading assignment from a science textbook (Modern Chemistry)

  • a quiz (which is automatically graded)

  • a few open-ended homework questions, and

  • a hands-on laboratory assignment along with a lab supplement video just in case the student is unable to perform the experiment on his/her own.

(In the lab supplement video, no results or conclusions are discussed. The student is prompted to record their observations in the laboratory notebook, and parents can check their student’s work in the lab answer key. )

Before starting the course, students are taught valuable study techniques and note-taking skills that may be used for any subject.

The course also provides a Student Guidebook which includes diagrams to label and outlines to use as they learn to take notes throughout the year. (Parents are provided with a Student Guidebook Answer Key.)

As mentioned above, students are instructed on how to conduct several lab experiments each month. The Student Lab Guide assists students in learning how to keep a laboratory notebook and teaches them how to write formal lab reports.

With Experience Chemistry, parents don’t need to be an expert or work ahead of their student. Concepts are explained thoroughly by the online instructors, and sample lab reports and answer keys are provided for all student work. The course provides flexibility, as students can work at their own pace within the comfort of their home. And the program allows for growth in a student’s independence as they learn to take notes over the course of the year.

All Level B (middle school) and Level C (high school) courses are a one-year subscription which starts when the course is activated in the parent’s dashboard.  So… if you purchase now, you can wait until the fall to actually begin the course.
