Making a TNT Timer Tutorial

I receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Please see our full disclosure policy for more details. Thank you for supporting Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood through your purchases.

For those who need a prop for a spy party… or just something to spice up timed math drills, here’s a simple tutorial for converting a kitchen timer to some mock TNT.

Supplies:

  • Wrapping paper tubes (or paper towel rolls)
  • Scissors
  • Red wrapping paper
  • Invisible Tape
  • Electrical Tape
  • Kitchen Timer

Procedure:

1.  Cut wrapping paper tubes into five 9-inch segments. (If using paper towel tubes, you can trim them to 9 inches for the proportions shown in the photos, or use them full-size to make longer TNT.)

2. Wrap cut tubes in red wrapping paper.

3.  Use invisible tape to temporarily secure the stack of tubes together.

4. Tape the ends with electrical tape.

5. Tape the timer onto the tubes with electrical tape and add another strip of tape about an inch above the bottom.

And… Voila!

 Now that’s one dynamite timer!

NOTE:  We very-seriously-and-honestly use this for our timed drills (and for other timing needs in our home). You can also click here to see how we used it at Levi’s spy birthday party.
