Memorize Scripture: Genesis 1, John 1, Exodus 20, and more!

I receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Please see our full disclosure policy for more details. Thank you for supporting Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood through your purchases.

Homeschooling in our home is quite imperfect.

There are days when I fail miserably and my character flaws are scattered before me in a scribble-scrabbled mess. Those times I come face-to-face with my selfishness and how much like a two-year-old I can act, I just want to bury myself under the covers instead of seize the day. That dreadful question crosses my mind…

How badly am I going to mess up today?

It’s then that I feel my need to pull out the One Book that will pull me through the doubt and discouragement from the memory of another day gone awry. Even so, sometimes that One Book seems too heavy for me to even lift from its place beside the bed. It is then that I lie there and listen to the words from that book echo through my mind… only because I have been blessed with a gift that others have given. It is the gift of the Word set to music – the Word hidden in my heart.

When the tough times hit, when I get discouraged or lonely, when I feel like a failure who’s never going to get this whole motherhood thing right – songs of scripture come to my mind and help me through the next few moments when all I want to do is cry out in despair [or simply steep in a useless bout of apathy or self-pity… or (would you believe it?) sometimes even self-loathing].

Over the past decade, our family has memorized scripture through Seeds Family Worship, Bible Readeez, and Mega Verses Ministries.

God’s Word is a special treasure hidden within my heart to not just help me guide my children, but to help me guide me. And I am thankful for others who offer their talents to help hide God’s Word in my heart – and in the hearts of my children.

Mega Verses Ministries – The Hendricks Family

Fellow homeschooling friends Tommy & Jo Hendricks use their family’s musical gifts to assist other families with memorizing large passages of scripture through their ministry Mega Verse Ministries. I had the pleasure of meeting Jo in person about nine months ago at the Teach Them Diligently Conference in Nashville.

Because I had been in contact with her for a few years and had watched her dozens of times in our homeschool community’s opening assembly (as we memorized Exodus 20 and Ephesians 6 in a group setting), it really just felt like I was catching up with an old friend!

Memorizing John 1: 1-7 (KJV)

This is the Hendricks family’s sixth year in a classical homeschool group (in Tallahassee), and this year marked the first year that Jo tutored an upper level. So, in their spare time this year (ha!), they managed to create a new Hand Motion Video DVD for learning John 1 in English… and in Latin! Watch the John 1 Preview video here.

This DVD includes a lyrics video of John 1 in English along with hand motions to help with memorization, as well as a lyrics video for John 1 in Latin and an instrumental version of the song so that it can be sung as a performance (in your home? at church? at a homeschool end-of-year program?).

Memorizing Exodus 20:1-17 (KJV)

Check out this hand motions video to be used for memorizing Exodus 20. You can download the MegaVerses Volume 3 album or the Exodus 20 song on itunes.

Memorizing Ephesians 6: 1-20 (KJV)

Our homeschool group embarked on memorizing Exodus 20:1-17 using this hand motion video provided by Mega Verses during our opening assembly each week. By the end of the year, we were able to sing it using just the TRACK version of the song. It was beautiful to watch children ages 3 to 12 singing the commands that are to be written upon our hearts.

Memorizing Genesis 1:1-27

Their most recent large scripture passage song is Genesis 1:1-27. Check out the Genesis 1 hand motions video here.

The Hendricks also provide songs and downloadable lyric videos that can be used for worship at churches and in homes, and they even take their kids on the road to churches and family events as they sing scripture songs and encourage families to memorize God’s Word! If your church would be interested in hosting them for a special night of worship, visit their site at MegaVerses.com.

We’d love for you to drop down to the comments and share one of your favorite scripture verses and why it is important to you. It delights us to read how God has worked [or is working] in others’ lives!
