Minecraft Birthday Party

I receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Please see our full disclosure policy for more details. Thank you for supporting Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood through your purchases.

We celebrated David’s 8th birthday back in March. I always find it funny how much research I have to put into most of our parties because I lack the vocabulary and background knowledge (aka, grammar) of the theme the boys have chosen. Thanks to Pinterest, I can usually close that gap fairly quickly (or just fake it for the most part).

After checking out all the different Minecraft-themed party cakes, I ended up choosing something so simple it’s almost ridiculous. Although I ventured away from my normal Sara-Lee-Pound-Cake creations, I used pre-made brownies for this one. I was originally going to make a “Creeper” (whatever that is), but I ended up making some last minute changes for an even easier option.

A Minecraft Dirt Block Cake

After I stacked the 4 sheets of brownies (the dirt block) and iced the top of the dirt block with green icing (the grass), David asked for me to make some Minecraft villagers for the top. I happened to have some white chocolate chips and sprinkles on hand, so I just melted the white chocolate, dipped the Hershey rectangles, and stuck the sprinkles on for eyes and a mouth. (Then we ate the rest of the huge Hershey chocolate bar.)  David loved it!

The Food…

  • Trap Doors:  Pretzels
  • Fences:  Rice Chex
  • TnT:  Bite-size Twizzlers
  • Carrots:  Carrots!
  • Gold:  Cubed Cheese
  • Villagers:  Miniature Club Crackers
  • Orange Wool:  Cheese Puffs
  • Dirt Clods:  Krave cereal
  • Diamonds:  Hershey Kisses
  • Cookies:  Cookies!
  • Emeralds:  Grapes
  • Coal:  Rice Krispie treats with food coloring
  • Mushrooms:  Marshmallows dipped in red candy melts and white chocolate chips on top
  • Torches:  Chocolate covered pretzel sticks
  • Axes:  Chocolate covered marshmallows stuck on the end of pretzel sticks

The Games…

Because I end up being too social with my friends during the boys’ parties, I forget to facilitate structured games. A few years ago, I decided to just post stations in our family room. For this party, we had…

Pin the Duck on the Minecraft Creeper. I printed out an image of a Minecraft duck chicken on label paper to make the stickers. (I stood corrected by the Minecraft gurus, but I still think it looks more like a duck than a chicken.)

Construction Zone.  We always have a construction zone regardless of what the party theme is.

Destruction Zone.  A favorite of all the children who come to our home.  After setting up cardboard blocks, they crash into it with a plastic whiffle ball on a string.

And we always try to have a bit of airbrush face painting and balloon-making. We are so fortunate to have such talented friends!

Oh! Almost forgot!  I previously wrote about how we made a simple Minecraft Chicken (or Duck?) Piñata.

It was a hit!

Party favors…

We stopped by the LEGO store a few weeks before the party and stocked up on LEGO pieces that we could use to make miniature mine craft creations. This provided the boys with an opportunity to build LEGOs to prepare for the party. It was a win-win!

And now… for the many expressions of David:

How that boy makes my heart feel like it’s about to burst!

Eight years ago today I received the best Valentine ever, our second son David. There are no words to express how he blesses my heart and soul. His creativity, his humor, his heart of worship, and his ability to meet anyone in any stage of life and make them feel important and loved: these things absolutely amaze me. It is a perplexing, humbling, and glorious thing to be his mother. Thank you, God, for this blessing in life that I do not deserve. Thank you for David. He makes life just so much sweeter. – A mother’s journal entry on February 14, 2014
