Our Field Trips and Activities {2013-2014 in Review}

I receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Please see our full disclosure policy for more details. Thank you for supporting Half-a-Hundred Acre Wood through your purchases.

I realized I dropped the ball this year on one of my biggest priorities in blogging, which is my family. I did not chronicle our lives to the extent I have in the past, and both my children and husband noticed. So… here’s one last post that covers many of the things I wish I had written about this year.

Stephen reads our 2012-2013 yearbook.

Our 2013-2014 Activities in Review (those that I’ve not already written – or forgotten – about) 4-H, which included a fall display, a speech based on this article, poster contest, homemade piggy banks, trash-to-treasure toy (trashman marionette), and photography contest.

Theatre Productions, which included “Fiona’s Gift” (as part of the Homeschool Dramatic Society in Cookeville.  Stephen also joined our church’s blacklight puppet ministry, Big Image Puppet Productions.

Piano Lessons, where Stephen played his favorite, “Star Wars Theme.”

Swim Lessons…

Community Service, which included a short play performed by our homeschool group for the nursing home, our church’s Christmas outreach “Stockings with Care,” and participation in the Second Harvest Food giveaways in our local community.

Field Day…  One thing I love about our field days: Watching 17-year-olds as they help and cheer for their 8-year-old team members.

Our 2013-2014 Field Trips in Review, most of which we took with friends from our homeschool group

  • The Nina in Chattanooga
  • Days of Knights in Oak Grove, Kentucky
  • The Dyer Observatory in Nashville
  • The Adventure Science Center in Nashville
  • The Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville
  • The Brass Family Concert at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center
  • A performance of Lois Lowry’s Number the Stars at Nashville Children’s Theatre
  • The Tennessee Renaissance Festival

Family trips during the 2013-2014 school year

  • Tannehill Ironworks and U.S. Space & Rocket Center: Alabama
  • Dunn’s Falls in Mississippi
  • Sights and Scenes from Lafayette Louisiana
  • Desoto State Park and Little River Canyon in Alabama
  • Burgess Falls Tennessee
  • Hot Springs and Bathhouse Row in Arkansas
  • The Wichitas of Southwest Oklahoma: Holy City, Fish Ladder, and Heart Rock
  • See Rock City (and 7 states at once)!
  • Touring Atlanta with Kids!

Sometimes people ask how we do so much. Aside from my husband’s unique schedule that allows us to travel and take so many field trips together, I really don’t know. Somehow God has increased our time to experience all of this in the midst of pregnancy (and Levi’s broken arm last fall, and frozen water pipes this winter, and a kitchen remodel which we finished up last week). The boys have read many more books this year than they ever have. They are finishing up their math books – and everything else – this week. And we have all learned and grown so much (in my case, even literally! ha!) that it can only be attributed to God’s grace.

With this post, I am wrapping up this year’s highlights to capture these moments in time for us.

With love to all five of my boisterous blessings,
Brandy (aka, Mom-Mom)
