Script-n-Scribe Hymns in History: Middle Ages to Modern Times

Features hymns from the Middle Ages through the early 1900s with historical highlights, related scriptures, and picture study along with a gentle introduction/application of English grammar concepts. Study poems of praise from the Middle Ages to Early Modern Times in Script-n-Scribe Hymns in History, and explore hymns through cursive Copywork, scripture, and grammar with art study!

“…hymns connect us with generations now gone. Each week millions of Christians in local settings around the world, using hymns composed by believers from every era and branch of Christendom, join voices in united bursts of praise, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in their hearts to the Lord.” – Robert J. Morgan, Then Sings My Soul

Over the course of our homeschooling journey, our family has memorized quite a few things. All of them have been useful. But when the darkness has shrouded my heart and sorrow has clouded my joy, what did my mind reflect upon? What did I cling to in my moments of desperation and loneliness? Just two things: Scripture and Song.

As a homeschool mom, I easily overlook that which I should not neglect – the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty – which can often be lost amidst the more urgent demands of academic skill development. One of my greatest lessons learned through the past decade of homeschooling is that the most important things are often those that don’t have checkboxes. Yet I realize my tendency to let the most important things fall away in pursuit of what I believe are the most urgent things. I feel like Paul, crying out, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do!” (See Romans 17:15-20.)

Have you been there?

This is the entire reason we started incorporating art and poetry study into the basic skill of handwriting. It has been a way for us to easily integrate the study of the true and beautiful so that it becomes an integral part of the overall school routine. And one of the most beautiful forms of poetry that exists today includes songs of praise and worship to God. I want to provide my children with Words of Truth to cling to in their moments of desperation and loneliness. This has been the driving force behind our latest copywork book, Script-n-Scribe™ Hymns in History.

Hymns in History provides a way to reflect upon the meaning of the hymns and their use in history. The hymns selected for this study relate to people and events from the Middle Ages through major conflicts of the 20th Century. It’s beautiful to see the threads of praise that have been woven into the story of mankind.

Although it’s a simple skill, copywork can be used as a tool for memorizing and reflection, and it can greatly enhance a child’s ability to write well later in life because it provides exposure to the ideas and techniques of the great masters of words. Copying a poetic passage and responding to works of art increases powers of observation and elocution while introducing children to that which is lovely.

While the primary goal of this resource is to provide hymn study with picture study prompts and copywork for students to practice penmanship, the book can be used as a framework for 1) building listening, dictation, and narration skills, 2) pursuing oral and written composition, 3) memorizing poetry to build vocabulary and imagery techniques, and 4) extending art study, vocabulary, and English grammar lessons.

The copywork in this book includes a gentle introduction to basic English grammar concepts, including sentence parts, types of sentences, and parts of speech. Each picture study introduces an English grammar concept using copywork prompts that also encourage the student to notice the details in the artwork. Each hymn is paired with related Scripture and an art study that relates to the hymn lyrics.

This 155-page workbook includes the following:
  • Twelve carefully selected hymns with historical highlights regarding each hymn (or its use) from the Middle Ages through the conflicts of the 20th Century. Featured hymns include “All Glory, Laud, and Honor,” “All Creatures of Our God and King,” “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” “I Sing the Mighty Power of God,” “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” “Amazing Grace,” “Though Troubles Assail Us,” “Jesus Shall Reign,” “For the Beauty of the Earth,” “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” “Under His Wings,” and “O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go.”
  • Copywork pages for all twelve hymns (over 100 pages of copywork!)
  • Scripture verses related to each hymn (in King James Version due to its similarity to the hymns in poetic word/sentence structure)
  • Inspirational quotes from five different men from Christian history: St. Francis of Assisi, Martin Luther, John Newton, George Müller, and Richard Wurmbrand
  • Mini-poster pages for each hymn showing a featured artwork selection with its historical highlight
  • Twelve works of art from eleven different artists: Pietro Lorenzetti, Giotto, J.M.W. Turner, Albert Bierstadt, Frederik Kloss, John Steuart Curry, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Jan van Eyck, Thomas Cooper Gotch, Rembrandt, and William Bradford.
  • Hymn sheet music in the appendix.
  • A gentle introduction to English grammar concepts including: parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, prepositions, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, interjections), sentence parts (phrases, clauses, subjects, predicates), and sentence types (declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory).
  • Memorization plan to assist with memorizing the hymns or scriptures
  • Ideas for further extending the art, hymn, and English grammar study
  • Although this is a completely independent study, for those who use our Mission: Faith Forgers curriculum, 11 of the hymns in this copybook are hymns also studied in Mission: Faith Forgers.

If you’re seeking to enjoy more hymn study and art during your studies about the Middle Ages, Reformation, Great Awakenings, Industrial Age, or even events of the 20th century, this book provides a simple means of fulfilling that goal!
